Stanford Research Systems SIM900 Mainframe

The Stanford Research Systems SIM900 Mainframe is a versatile and robust platform designed to house up to eight Small Instrumentation Modules (SIM). It serves as the backbone for building a custom measurement system, providing power, computer interfaces, clock synchronization, and individual module status in a compact and rugged design.

Key Features

  • Eight Module Slots: Accommodates up to eight single-width or double-width modules, allowing for a flexible and expandable setup.
  • Remote Module Capability: Includes a ninth port for connecting a module that needs to be placed outside the mainframe, useful for experiments requiring close proximity to the test setup.
  • Communication Interfaces: Equipped with RS-232 and optional GPIB (IEEE-488.2) interfaces for seamless communication with a host computer. Messages are routed based on port numbers, facilitating easy data management.
  • 10 MHz Reference Input: Provides a master clock to synchronize all modules, with an optional input for phase-locking to an external 10 MHz reference.
  • Cascade Multiple Mainframes: Allows cascading of multiple SIM900 mainframes for larger setups, all controlled through a single host interface.
  • Start-Up Script Memory: Features a 4000-byte non-volatile memory for storing and executing start-up scripts, ensuring consistent initialization of all modules upon power-up.
  • Independent Queues: Each port has independent 511-byte input and output queues to manage data flow efficiently.
  • Eavesdrop RS-232 Port: Dedicated port for monitoring all communications, simplifying debugging and setup verification.
  • Front Panel Indicators: LED indicators provide status information for the mainframe and installed modules, including host interface, timebase, communication status, start-up script, and power status.

Technical Specifications

  • Power Supply: Provides well-regulated and filtered DC voltages (+/-5 V, +/-15 V, +24 V) to all modules.
  • Clock Synchronization: 10 MHz master clock for module synchronization, with an optional external timebase input.
  • Interfaces: RS-232 standard; optional GPIB.
  • Control Software: All module parameters can be set and queried via the serial interface.
